Overhead Gantry Crane Course
This Overhead Gantry Crane Course is designed for individuals who are required to operate overhead gantry cranes as part of their daily work duties. The course ensures operators have the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to use these cranes safely and in compliance with current health and safety regulations.
The course covers both theoretical and practical aspects of operating overhead gantry cranes, focusing on safe lifting practices, equipment checks, and hazard awareness. It is suitable for novice operators as well as those requiring refresher training.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the legal responsibilities of overhead crane operators under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and PUWER.
- Recognise different types of gantry cranes and lifting equipment.
- Conduct pre-use inspections and identify potential defects.
- Learn safe lifting techniques and correct use of slings and lifting accessories.
- Operate the crane confidently under supervision, using pendant or remote control systems.
- Understand load limits, signaling, and communication during lifting operations.
Course Content:
- Introduction to legislation and operator responsibilities.
- Types of overhead gantry cranes and their applications.
- Pre-use checks, maintenance, and defect reporting procedures.
- Lifting accessories, slinging techniques, and load assessment.
- Safe operation of cranes using control systems.
- Signaling and communication.
- Practical operating sessions and safety awareness.
- Hazard identification and risk control.
Duration:
Approximately 3-4 hours, depending on experience and group size.
Delegates will be assessed on both theoretical knowledge and practical operation. A certificate of training will be issued upon successful completion, valid for 3 years.
